Women on Target Program December 2013

Coastal Georgia Gun Club hosted its semi-annual Women on Target Program in December, 2013. Carol Rosenqvist, GSSA Vice President of Training and Education, head of Women’s Programs and former GSSA President, came from northeast Georgia to conduct the program.

There were 32 women, ranging in age from 19 to 72, who participated in the program. Most of them had little or no experience with shooting. Many of the women came with a group of friends, family or co-workers.

Carol presented information on firearms, firearm safety and recreational shooting in general during the morning classroom portion of the program. Carol led a discussion on a wide variety of subjects including how a firearm works, where to find a place to shoot and what information they should have before buying a firearm, and answered many questions from the participants.

After lunch the women met the volunteers – 32 members and friends of Coastal Georgia Gun Club – who would act as coaches. Each woman had a coach standing with her to assist her as she shot. The participants were divided into small groups and, moving from one venue to the next in relays, were given the opportunity to shoot .22 caliber rifles and pistols, and 12- and 20-gauge shotguns. There was also a station set up to provide information and instruction on cleaning a pistol. A few women asked if they could bring their own pistols and get information on handling and firing them safely. Once the scheduled part of the program was completed, the coaches agreed to stay and work with these women so that they could become more familiar and comfortable with their firearms.

This Program could not have been presented without the volunteers from Coastal Georgia Gun Club: the coaches donated their time and brought the necessary firearms from their own collections. The ammo was donated by CGGC members. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, ammunition and firearms to make this program possible.

Interest in the Women on Target Program is high in the Brunswick area. Due to space, time and safety considerations, it is necessary to limit participation to no more than 50 participants at any one program. We welcome newcomers and returning participants alike. The next program is tentatively scheduled for May 2014. Anyone interested in attending should contact Barbara Senbertrand through the Club website. Reservations will be taken beginning in late March. Advance reservations are required in order to be sure we have enough equipment and supplies to make the program run smoothly.
